Nairobi

Downtown Nairobi is very modern and clean - a big contrast compared to the poor hut colonies at the outskirts of the city.

Hell's Gate Park

The Hell's Gate valley is filled with zebras and gazelles.

Zebras are drinking from a tank provided by park rangers..

Look at them! We could observe zebras for ages....

From our quiet camp, we had a beautiful view into the valley below.

Vulcano Longonot

Our first encounter with Maasai people. Girls from the village below Longonot crater walk along their big herds of sheep and goat.

The Rift Valley was formed after two continental desks collided and then split again. There are many volcanoes and alkaline lakes in the valley. 

Lake Nakuru

Lake Nakuru is an alkaline lake, but that is fine with birds. Every year, thousands of pelicans and flamingoes come to its shores.

We saw big white pelicans and two kinds of flamingoes (white Greater Flamingo and pink Lesser Flamingo).

Marabou Stork

There are several groups of baboons living in the Nakuru park.

African buffalo has very strong horns. It belongs to the "Big Five", the five strongest animals of Africa - buffalo, elephant, lion, leopard and rhino.

Warthogs have short tusks and are very shy. They appear disoriented, as they keep running back and forth in the grass.

There are black and white rhinos in the Nakuru Lake N.P.  White rhinos feed on grass and live in groups. Black rhinos feed on leaves of small bushes and live rather solitarily. They tend to be aggressive even towards humans. This picture shows a white rhino.

Giraffes have a very elegant walking style.
